Debate of Leading DFL Candidates for Minneapolis Mayor

 

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

Moderated by Professor Larry Jacobs, Humphrey School

 

Many challenges will face the next mayor of Minneapolis. How do the leading candidates for the DFL endorsement propose to address these challenges?  Participating in the debate will be Mark Andrew, Jackie Cherryholmes, Betsy Hodges, Don Samuels, and Gary Schiff. 

 

Candidates: 

Mark Andrew is a former Hennepin County Commissioner, serving 16 years on the county board. He is the founder and owner of GreenMark, which helps companies improve their environmental reputations. He also served as chair of the Minnesota DFL Party in the 1990's.

Jackie Cherryholmes served a dozen years on the Minneapolis city council and was former city council president. She currently runs a consulting and lobbying business with clients that range from garbage haulers and construction companies to local shop owners and big developers.

Betsy Hodges is a member of the MInneapolis City Council representing Ward 13. Hodges was elected in 2005 and chairs the Ways and Means/Budget Committee. Before joining the Council, Hodges served as a development director for nonprofits, most recently for the Minnesota Justice Foundation.

Don Samuels is a member of the Minneapolis City Council representing Ward 5. Samuels joined the City Council in 2003, and chairs the Public Safety, Civil rights and Health Committee. He is also founder of the Northside Achievement Zone, a nonprofit aiming to end violence in the area.

Gary Schiff was elected to the Minneapolis City Council in 2001 and represents Ward 9. He chairs the Zoning and Planning Committee. Prior to serving on the City Council, Gary was active in his neighborhood organization, historic preservation efforts and the gay rights movement.
